REVOLT ATHENΣ - World Premiere: VIENNA/ Music Theatre Days/Werk 2 at the Meidling Cable Factory:

Harald Lacina | Online Merker [AT] September 4, 2015

This piece was a collaboration with ODC Athens/VYRSO. Like disPLACE, this piece also addresses the issue of gentrification. This phenomenon has spread rapidly in Athens in recent years, not least due to the financial crisis. From the 1980s onward, large shopping malls on the outskirts of Athens drew away large groups of shoppers, leading to the closure of numerous long-established businesses in the city center. As a result, residents migrated to other parts of the city. Immigrants, bringing their own culture and businesses, settled in the vacant apartments with their now-cheap rents. Call centers and coffee shops opened in the central districts of Keramikos and Metxourgio starting in the 1990s. It wasn't until the 2004 Olympic Games that these districts became attractive again to the "real estate mafia." However, the onset of Grexit brought this real estate boom to an abrupt end.

Director Elli Papakonstantinou , founder and artistic director of the Art Centre “VYRSODEPSEIO” and head of the theatre group “ODC ENSEMBLE”, studied dramaturgy and directing in Athens. In this play, she depicts the chaotic everyday life of crisis-stricken Athens.

Actress Rosa Prodromou , musician Tilemachos Moussas , and visual artist Pantelis Tzimou met on stage in a hybrid performance. They used the dark humor of despair to break down and challenge our prejudices about gentrification and art.

The text for this piece was provided by Tsimaras Tzanatos , the visuals were provided by Pantelis Makkas .

The piece opens with a roughly 10-minute monody in which the notes gecgfg are incessantly repeated, while geometric visuals flicker across a huge projection screen, accompanied by statistics on economic decline, rising unemployment and prices, and so on. This serves as the piece's opening act. The musician Tilemachos Moussas then prances around the stage, working up a sweat and removing his T-shirt. He then drinks water from a PET bottle and begins to gurgle and sing the European anthem.

The singing actress Rosa Prodromou then recounts her move to Athens, her neighbors, the sights, and the demonstrations in Syntagma Square in front of the Greek Parliament. She shows photos of herself and friends from times when things were better for them. After all, we learn, 200,000 artists and just as many scientists have already left their homeland. This performance was sung and recited in English. Only once, when the discussion turns to the sale of the uninhabited Greek islands (of the 3,054 islands, only 113 are inhabited, along with 4 inland islands!), does a heated argument erupt between the musician and the singer. While the musician supports the sale because he simply wants to survive, the singer categorically rejects it.

Couldn't these uninhabited islands be leased for 99 years, as China once did with Hong Kong? My suggestion, sent by email to the Greek ambassador in Vienna, naturally went unanswered…

At the end of the piece, the visual artist Pantelis Tzimou covers the singer's bare torso and arms with clay, who now moves menacingly and with stamping steps on the stage in a mixture of warlike Amazon and French Marianne, until her despair finally erupts in a tremendous scream…

This production was enthusiastically received by the audience. However, it can only be seen one more time, on September 4th at Werk 2.
