It's not a matter of style or of a supremacist logic. It is an absolute negation of the human being. The negation of the Other. I, above all and everyone else, and usurper of the Other's body. Loss of identity. Violence with no qualms. Elli Papakonstantinou takes in her hands the box of Antigone and crushes it. She puts in it everything has become mythological and she destroys it. She explores the fact of breaking a Myth. What is left? Antigone is a figure that represents the power of detachment, of screwing up organized games and of finding her own dimension, her own image.
Antigone is the female power, it is the power of the underworld. What Papakonstantinou does is to retrieve those underworld powers to perform - on a sort of stage made by bits and pixels - what is still unspeakable, impossible, incomprehensible. Her show "Trace of Antigone" is more powerful than a "spleen". She goes beyond the tragic and aestheticizing French vision. She's careful not to tell any story, instead, she firmly investigates, with a focused ferocity, the Other, the so considered weak part of the Male/Female. And this part is bound to the reality of being a Woman. Because now more than ever, the dominating forces, the forces that destroy and cannot create, have reached unimaginable dimensions. This is why this show on Zoom is so intense and so powerful, it pushes us to breathe taking off our protective mask. The women in Antigone breathe, they breathe a lot. They are strong, angry, with their fingers clenched in their mouths, to indicate all the strength needed to rebel, to assault the violence, to be able to finally exist as an active subject among many scattered objects. The Woman is in the collective imagination the weakest part, the part that is possible to manipulate and play with. We have forgotten that Women are creators, they generate not only life, but thoughts, spiritual depths and human virtues. In this show all of this can be seen in the many windows of the Zoom platform, of the various sounds, in the visual and iconic references.
Here you have Antigone, from a distance. A distance that allows Antigone to touch you stronger than any violence. The use of digital media is imperative because it is not mediated, but immediate. The construction and the de-construction, the mythological narration, the perception of being the performers in a world of performers who are acting and staging a desperate show against death. The cast of women who offer this dimension, the actresses involved in the project, is very powerful. This is why I believe it's useless. it's not necessary to write about their talents. It's necessary to accept what they give. What arrives. Talent is a romantic virtuosic idea. What I found in those actresses who have narrated, discovered and detected Antigone and what she represents, is the Present, the Real, the unveiled Underworld. This is why this project, born as a non physical show in the incredible time of social distancing, is totally necessary. It serves its contents. It arrives, powerfully. This is why Elli Papakonstantinou's vision is so unique and irrepetible. Now. Now, absolutely now.”
