Cph Opera Festival goes avant-garde.
Avant-garde is originally a military term that describes the vanguard that paves the way for the main force.
So an indispensable element in a war, and therefore also a really good description of the artists who dare to go new ways, do the unexpected, and take new steps into unknown territory. And the Greek ODC Ensemble is precisely exploratory in every step in THE CAVE, and Elli Papakonstantinou's disruptive interpretation of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, with punk opera, video art and shadow theatre, is avant-garde at its blackest.
In the equation, those trapped in the cave only see the shadows of what is happening behind them, and the big questions that Plato asked about what are shadows and what is sun, and whether some might just rather see the shadows than the sun, ODC moves forward in time, and neoclassical expressions such as Fake news and Alternative reality now play crucial roles in the cyberpunk opera THE CAVE.
It's a solid, brave, and multifaceted ensemble that tours with the ultra-black show, and right now they even have a guest star in the show, the legendary Blaine Leslie Reininger from Tuxedomoon – cool to see the old silver punk keep his style and fix his tie, while the significantly younger Greeks ride on the high studs with sunglasses, silver lamé and a bare torso.
THE CAVE is a mix of opera, video, sound effects, shadow theatre and audio snippets from Trump's press conferences, and if you think you're witnessing reality, you'll have to think again. Or should you?
