Is the Greek audience ready for the queer Bacchae?

Georgia Oikonomou | News 27/7 - The Magazine [GR] July 4, 2023

I sketch Dionysus as a queer deity in constant flux, escaping every shape and contour. He crosses borders—gendered ones, and those between fiction and reality. Neither man nor woman, Dionysus returns to take revenge. Euripides expresses multiplicity and union with the Whole. It is upon this horizon that I meet him to offer another version of the myth.

I see the possibility of becoming our true self in this life, in the here and now, through changes and potential catastrophes. It does not matter; perhaps it is more important to move toward where Dionysus points us. Toward the room of desire, where we do not know exactly what will happen to us if we dare. This path is what the performance records—a movement toward the deepest self.
